Top 5 Reason You need Wifi Range Extenders at Home

Posted by on

In today’s modern world, a strong Wi-Fi connection is as essential as food and air. Setting up a wireless internet connection at your home has never been easier. However the trouble with Wi-Fi signals being emitted from your router is that it has a restricted range.

Having a weak signal can be a nightmare nowadays. The strength of the signal will degrade as the distance between your device and the router will increase. Slower surfing speed and unsteady connections can give you a really hard time while browsing the web.

Though there are several ways which can help you to improve the strength of your Wi-Fi signal and gain maximum speed out of your router such as by means of wifi booster.

1. Are You Using old Router?

Routers are often ignored, most people don’t give any attention to their routers till the time it is in working state which results in poor internet connectivity. Even if your router is working fine then also you should think about its model’s age and prefer upgrading if the technology used in your router is obsolete. As a router goes older it doesn’t only need a newer hardware, but also newer software updates which increases security and eliminates chances of possible exploits.

Upgrading to a modern router can effectively help in improving Wi-Fi signal. It will provide a better Wi-Fi range and will also emit a stronger signal. You do not need to spend all your money on flagship routers to get a better signal, many medium range routers have newer technology which can outrun your old router. A 5GHz band router will perform much more efficiently than a 2.4GHz band router so if you are willing to spend more then don’t hesitate to buy a flagship router as they work tremendously better. Look out for the best wifi range extender online and collect information on them so that you can make a wise choice while buying.

2. Using Wrong Channel

If you look through your Wi-Fi router’s settings you will notice a list of channels which may be set on auto mode of selection, you can manually switch between channels to see which one works the best for you, as some channels can be faster than the other ones depending upon the level of interference. The WiFi settings can be made using 192.168.l.l in the default browser.

Even nowadays most of Wi-Fi routers use 2.4GHz bands even though there are options of routers which can offer 5GHz. As every 2.4GHz channel overlaps which leads to poor results. For minimum interference you can use channels 1, 6 and 11 as they do not overlap. Tools such as Acrylic Wi-Fi can help you find the smoothest channel, but until you find the best, channels 1, 6 and 11 are ideally the fastest. If you have a newer Wi-Fi router then it can automatically use the perfect channel with minimum interference. With a 5GHz band router you don’t need to select the most ideal channel it will probably even allow the use of thicker 40, 80 and 160MHz channels.

3. You Have Bigger Space to Cover

You should always try to set up the router in the center of your home and try not to place any metal objects nearby the router as metal dissolves the electromagnetic energy. Ceilings of your home helps in the transmission of the signal, but the walls absorb the radiation and acts as a hindrance.

Having a microwave near the router or using a microwave might slow down your internet speed as operating frequencies of the both are approximately the same. Radiation escaping microwave can interrupt the signal. The radio waves from the routers reach out and downwards from the source so it is ideal to setup the router higher from the floor while positioning the antenna upwards will help the signals to reach farther. And the last but not the least, human bodies also inhibits the signals as it is mostly water, which leads to poor connections in places which are crowded.

4. You Are not using Wifi Range Extenders

Wi-Fi range extenders work independently, there are some Wi-Fi routers which can perform as a range extender as well. A Wi-Fi range extender is a device that widens the Wi-Fi signals from the router. Wi-Fi range extender emits the signal forward and increases its range so that the connected devices can receive signals in the dead spots /dead zones too. It boosts the signal from the router and increases its reach. But it is not suitable for a device which is bandwidth-hungry as it will lessen the bandwidth to dead spots /zones. A Wi-Fi range extender won’t hurt your pocket much. It is a small device which needs to be plugged.

A Wi-Fi range extender won’t hurt your pocket much. It is a small device which needs to be plugged in a power source. As it extends the signals reach, it does not make the signal any stronger, it trades reach for quality. You must know where to place the Wi-Fi range extender as it is very much important for its performance. The best position to set up an extender is in the middle of your Wi-Fi router and your device, the extender should always be inside the range of the router.

A Wi-Fi extender is a perfect solution for you if you just need to boost your Wi-Fi signals to use devices for low bandwidth functions. A Wi-Fi range extender is also known as Wi-Fi range booster or repeaters. Few of the 2017’s best wifi extender are ‘Amped Wireless Athena-EX High Power AC2600 Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE2600M)’ and ‘Netgear Nighthawk X4 AC2200 Wi-Fi Range Extender (EX7300)’.

5. Your ISP Provider at Fault

It cannot always be the router which may cause to poor internet connectivity as ultimately your internet speed depends on your service provider. Your internet service provider might have technical difficulties which can unconsciously cost you a higher internet connectivity speed. Your service provider may have changed its network configuration which can also result in you getting a lower internet speed.

ISPs may deliberately set up filters or configurations which can result into a poorer performance. If you feel that all your equipments and devices are working perfectly and still you are getting poor internet connectivity, then you do not need to hesitate to contact your internet service provider. They will file your complaint and troubleshoot the problem as soon as they can.

Hi John, maybe you can help us.
We have a router from our ISP that sits in the den. A laptop sits about 10 feet away on the dining room table. 1 Kindle Fire HD is then about 10 more feet away in the living room, from the laptop. We also have an extender right next to where the Kindle Fire is used. However, the signal keeps getting dropped. If your are on the internet for a while then close the Kindle or go play a game that isn’t on the internet the internet disconnects. We then have to lose down the router and the kindle and re-start them. Do you have any suggestions as what we should do to keep the Kindle reception from dropping?

I agree with you that wifi range extender is needed at home.I think this is a very insightful post.Thank you for this great advice.
