How to Set your preferred domain (www or non-www) in Google Search Console

There are many people who are still confused about their preferred domain name (www or Non-www). Frankly Speaking, Both www and Non-www are same and different both at the same time, for you they are same because both of them will take you to your website but according to Google, they are different.

What should be your preferred domain depends on upon your site’s URL for example is my site URL but if I am using it will get redirected to that is why should be my preferred one but it is not a compulsory and great method . You must check your site’s URL using www and non-www and you would get to know about your actual URL. And You can either choose www or non-www.

What is a need to Set your preferred domain ?

Do you really need to specify a preferred domain? The answer is Yes you need to specify a preferred domain. Your preferred domain will get indexed by Google. Before taking any action you should check your URL using www and non-www whether both of them are redirecting to the same page or not ? Actually, they should redirect to the same page.

As Google has made it clear : ” If you don’t specify a preferred domain, we may treat the www and non-www versions of the domain as separate references to separate pages”. If you wouldn’t set a preferred URL, it will cause a problem because Google may consider it as a separate page or say duplicate content which is not Good (for SEO) your site.

How to Set your preferred domain (www or non-www) in Google Search Console ?

You can not ignore Google’s guidelines and rules and you should not if you want to survive in this business. You can read more about preferred domain here :

To specify a preferred domain, you need to verify ownership of domain with www and Non-www. You might like : How to verify site ownership on Google Search Console. Once you are verified with www and without www, Follow these steps :

  • Login to your Google Search Console Account.
  • And select the website that you actually want to prefer.
  • Now click on the gear icon , and then click Site Settings.(See the screenshot Below )Set your preferred domain
  • Now it is time to choose one Either www or non-www depends on you : (screenshot Below)Set your preferred domain

Now you have told Google about your preferred domain but What about other Search Engines ? We mostly ignore other Search Engines because we know Google is most popular of all and there are more searches performed daily on Google.

But, We should not underestimate other Search Engines because we bloggers want traffic and we should not think about numbers because 201 is always more than 200. If you get 1000 visitors from Google Search and 100 from other Search Engines, in the end, it will be counted as 1100.

So, the question comes how to set preferred domain for other Search Engines ?

We need not tell each and every Search Engine because it will take more time instead we can add some code in our .htaccess file i.e. using 301 Redirect.

Note : .htaccess file is very sensitive file and care must be taken while making any changes.

If you want to redirect non-WWW to WWW then use :

If you want to redirect WWW to non-WWW add the given code :

Important : Write your website’s name where I have written name of your website.

That’s all. If this post was useful to you then share it on Facebook or twitter with your friends.
