Samsung last week unveiled the Galaxy XCover Pro, its new rugged smartphone which has mid-range specifications. Its rugged smartphones have had a cult following and this new phone proves that Samsung is going in the right direction as it will be sold for $499 (₹35,349) in the US.
The spotlight feature of the phone is its swappable 4050mAh battery. It supports 15W fast charging along with special docks that use pogo pins. The phone’s target audience is the industrial workers or people who are often out in the field, as the removable battery should give enough hours. The phone’s two programmable buttons can be programmed for applications like push-to-talk.
DJ Koh, President and CEO of the IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics said, “The Galaxy XCover Pro is a reflection of Samsung’s increased investment and commitment to the B2B market. We believe the business mobility market is ripe for transformation in 2020 and we intend to be the leader in pioneering an open and collaborative mobile platform for the next generation of the digitally-enabled workforce.”
Samsung has yet again teamed with Microsoft, this time for Microsoft Teams as one of the two programmable buttons can be programmed the new Microsoft Teams Walkie Talkie feature. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, “Microsoft and Samsung have a deep history of bringing together the best hardware and software to help solve our customers’ challenges.” The Galaxy Xcover Pro will be a Verizon exclusive.
The other specifications include a 6.3 inches Infinity-O Full-HD+ display that can be used when you have gloves on, an octa-core Exynos 9611 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage that can be extended with a microSD storage up to 512GB. The bezels of the phone are quite noticeable but its IP68 dust and water-resistance rating and MIL-STD 810G certification make up for it. The XCover Pro has a dual-camera setup that includes a 25MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide camera. There’s a 13MP front-facing camera in the left corner of the screen. It will be shipped with Android 10 and Samsung’s One UI 2.0 out of the box.
