Google Assistant comes to more smartphones

This is one interesting news for tech geeks out there. Google digital assistant that attribute voice commands similar to Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. From the time of launch of this feature by Google, it was available on certain devices which include Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL phones, Android Wear Smartwatches Google Home smart speaker, and Allo messaging app. Recently, Google has announced that it is planning to provide this feature to many more phone devices. It includes phones running Android 6.0, or Marshmallow, Android 7.0 or Nougat and phones made by companies like Huawei, HTC, Samsung, LG, and Sony. This new update includes features for English speakers in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia. German language update is also scheduled. More languages will be added later this year (2017).

To get this update, make sure you have right device and have downloaded the Google Play Services app on your phone. Once you have installed the Google Assistant on your device, press the home button or say “OK Google” to begin using this feature. Ask different questions to your new digital assistant like “What is the weather forecast?” and Google Assistant will answer based on your location. In its announcement, Google said that their goal is to make the Assistant available anywhere you need it. In January 2017, the company announced plans to bring it to televisions and cars later this year.

New Android Messages app

This is one major update by Google this year to one of its messaging apps. It announced to change its Android Messenger name to Android Messages. Further, Android Messages will become the default messaging app for Android devices. This app will come pre-installed on Android phone from manufacturers like Motorola, LG, Sony, and others. It will also come pre-installed with Google’s Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Other users can download the app from the Google Play Store. Now Android Messages will become one of the three messaging apps provided by Google including Allo and Google Hangouts.

A future update to Google’s Android Messages app will make text messages (SMSs) more powerful and intuitive changing from Short Messaging Services (SMS) to Rich Communications Services (RCS). Once updated to RCS, Android Messages will provide features like receipts that display when a message has been delivered or read, maps, stickers and much more. RCS feature on Android Messages will be available on smartphones from partner cell phone service providers. All these features will be available only within the Android Messages app.

Android June Security Update

This much-awaited update has brought in some relief for Nexus and Pixel users. This update brings some crucial bug fixes and important security patches, which includes one notable patch for Pixel users experiencing the sporadic freezing issue on their device for some time. There are total 21 security and other issues resolved with this security patch dated 01-06-2017 and another 80 updates dated 05-06-2017. Two of these patches offer, Android partners with the flexibility to quickly fix a subset of vulnerabilities that are similar across all Android devices. Factory and OTA images are already live for compatible devices. This update has offered effective and clean Android experience for users.

Google plans faster updates for all Android phones in 2017

Recently, Google has revealed that half of the 1.4 billion Android devices didn’t get important security patches in 2016. It makes your Android devices more vulnerable and less performing. Now, Google is planning to work more closely with smartphone manufacturers to improve that stat. Google adds further that it is in the process to ease out manufacturer security rollouts by releasing “A/B updates” that help reduce the likelihood of a bricked phone after a patch. It is also in process to reduce the size of the security fixes to ensure faster downloads. Google has also reduced harmful apps by scanning the Play Store more often, which helped Googled reduce the frequency of Trojans, backdoors, phishing apps and hostile downloaders by significant numbers compared to 2015.

These were the most significant updates by Google which created some important changes this year so far. More Android updates are scheduled and expected later this year by Google. Just wait for more improvements with better updates.
