Apple acquires music discovery app Shazam and made it ad-free. Since last year, the news of Apple buying the music recognition app Shazam for about $400 million, was airing on the internet. So, nearly one year later, the deal has finally closed. As Apple has just confirmed its acquisition of the music identification app, Shazam. And the very first change that Apple will soon implement on the app, is to make it completely free to use. Not only that but also, Apple will make Shazam’s service ad-free for everyone, By removing the app’s ad-supported free tier.
This acquisition gives Apple another app on the Android platform. Which is quite a huge thing because Shazam was one of the early apps to gain success. It has been downloaded for over 1 billion times and is, in fact, a renowned music recognition app.
What Is Shazam?
Shazam is a music recognition app which let users identify songs simply by listening to the music playing around them. The app listens to songs via a microphone of the smartphone playing it and then delivers links to the track through services like Spotify and iTunes.
“Apple and Shazam have a long history together. Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music, in a statement.
Though it is not clear that how long will it take Apple to integrate Shazam’s core product into its own service. Or else the company will let Shazam be a standalone app in the market. Because the money spent on the acquisition is quite huge, as huge as $400 Million. And undoubtedly it is one of the Apple’s biggest acquisition both in music and overall.
Talking about music, nowadays there is cut-throat competition in the market. As there are a number of apps which serves the same purpose as music recognition. Such as Google Pixel’s smartphone which automatically recognizes music or Spotify which is another renowned name in the same field.
So, whatever be the reason for Apple to acquire Shazam. Be it, the integration of its core feature into their service. Or to increase the search of Apple music. But making it free and removal of advertising is indeed a good thing.
