2016 saw many changes in the web industry, and there were some unexpected results such as Mobile overtook Desktop for the first time in history and now is the most used device to access websites.
Well, that wasn’t completely unexpected as in 2015, Google stated that mobile devices are used for Google searches more than any devices in the category.
Talking about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), this industry was shaken by various Google Algorithms updated, and many of the best SEO-experts also failed to anticipate it.
The SEO industry keeps moving ahead, and hence it is vital to stay aware of SEO changes and technologies.
To make sure you don’t get left behind, in this article, I am going to discuss 7 Changes That Google Wants You To Make in 2017 For Better SEO Ranking.
So, let’s dive in.
1. Implement Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMPs)
Accelerated Mobile Pages is an open source project technology which is aimed to deliver website contents to mobile devices almost instantly.
The idea is to minimize the slow, clunky and frustrating experience of mobile users with slow internet connections. Google has officially integrated APM pages on search results.
Also, it has started to favor the AMP-enabled site by giving them visibility in the carousel and with a small lightning icon next to search result.
Considering the attention, these AMP sites are getting; it is a good time to think about it and change your website for 2017.
2. Switch to HTTPS (SSL Certificates)
Google has made it clear that HTTPS is now a ranking factor and they do index SSL certificates.
Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is used to add an extra level of security to your website and user’s data. After adding the SSL to your site, your site web URL will be changed to https with a green lock icon which informs users that the data they input to your site is secured.
Earlier only websites where there were transactions used to have SSL certificates, but now everyone is switching to it and get the Google favor in SERP rankings.
If you haven’t yet switched then do it now and make 2017 a “secure” year for your online business.

3. Improve Website Loading Time
Loading time of a website has always been an important factor in ranking and website with faster loading time are put ahead as that of slow sites.
Apart from the point of SEO, the slow site is also disliked by users, and if your website is taking more than 2 seconds to load, then you’re already losing 20% of your traffic and revenue.
There are many reasons why your website could be slow, but here are few of them which will give you a bright idea.
- Bad web hosting service.
- Too many server requests.
- Too many plugins installed.
- Bloated theme.
- High quality, non-optimized images.
Of course, there are more factors why your website is loading slowly, but these were few who will increase your site speed by a significant margin.
You can test your site speed using Pingdom and GTMetrix (free tools.)

4. Remove Popups in Mobile Devices
Let’s get is straight. Popups are annoying, and they can ruin the user experience and make them leave your website before they even start reading it.
Remember surfing some news site that shows a popup as soon as you visit and finding the close button is harder than Finding Nemo? (Sarcasm intended.)
That’s what we are talking about.
These popups are especially more annoying on mobile devices and with the small screen, it is easier to close the window rather than looking for the close button. If you’re showing popups on mobile devices, then please stop.
Also, there’s a particular news that Google will start penalizing sites with mobile popups and if you don’t want to be hit by that then quickly remove all the pop-up and provide a good experience to your users.
Not only popups but Interstitial ads (ads in between) should also be deleted, both on mobile devices and desktops.
5. Write Longer In-Depth Contents
Content Marketing was, is, and will always be the king of online internet marketing, and it is the backbone that holds the quality. But the competition is getting stronger day by day.
Gone are those day when you could rank a page with 300-500 words, and people would happily read it.
Reader are getting pickier, and now they have a trust issue with short articles (thanks to fake news sites with repeated, click bait titles), and they want to read properly researched, in-depth, long articles.
And the only solution is to reduce the quantity and publish only richer, more detailed, long-form content. That means we have to put more effort into every piece of article we produce.
However, the good thing is that you’ll stand out from the crowd, lead the competition, win user’s trust, and ultimately better SEO ranking.
6. User Experience and Engagement
User Experience Optimization (EUO) is again an important factor for SEO rankings – at least to some degrees.
Big G favors sites with real user engagement and provides better user experience i.e. sites which are mobile optimized, load faster, and popups free. Also, the time spent by users on your site is a clear indication of how well it is optimized for users.
2017 may see some more changes relates to EUO, especially related to mobile devices. Importance to AMP-enabled sites – which I explained earlier, could be the first sign of it.
7. Write Fresh Articles, Consistently
And the last change Google wants you to make in 2017 for better SEO ranking is to write new articles, always.
Writing one new article a day is not a big deal, but the problem starts when after a few weeks all our original content ideas are finished, and we start looking for new ideas.
Now that, it doesn’t mean that fresh content means always to publish a new post, but you can also update your old blog posts and keep the information up to date.
New Content = Frequent Indexing = A chance to achieve higher ranking
The more often you update your website with contents, downloads, pictures, and new web pages, the more frequently the search engine bots will crawl and index your sites. However, don’t be confused with frequent indexing with higher indexing.
Your pages will only be indexed higher if you are providing value after each update and your competitors fail to do the same.
Remember, it’s all about providing benefits to your readers and make them come again.
SEO is crucial for your website and staying up to date with latest changes is a must for bloggers and business owners.
If you have managed to get some ranking in 2016, then you should give a shot to these seven changes Google wants you to make in 2017 for better SEO ranking.
